SUPERNOVA: Nonito Donaire TKO2 Fernando Montiel

Nonito Donaire showed what a star turn in the ring is supposed to look like when he demolished ringwise Fernando Montiel in the second round via electrifying TKO last night at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The time of the stoppage was 2:25. By Carlos Acevedo

Keeping Promises: Fernando Montiel-Nonito Donaire Preview

While Fernando Montiel and Nonito Donaire are promising fireworks Saturday night in Las Vegas, devoted boxing fans are hoping their bout doesn’t evoke memories of a similar matchup four and a half years ago: Montiel’s last HBO showcase, a much anticipated but brutally disappointing 2006 clash against Jhonny Gonzalez. By Michael Nelson.

Donaire to face Montiel in November

Well, this is more like it. Today, Nonito Donaire posted on his facebook that Bob Arum is in the process of finalizing a bout between him and 118 pound titlist Fernando Montiel in November. Montiel had a bout scheduled for next month against Rafael Concepcion, but it seems that the bout may be off. This could be the challenge that Donaire has been looking for. Montiel was on the fringes of the pound for pound top 10 for a while, but had fallen off some before his stunning upset of Hozumi Hasegawa. However, even a faded Montiel would easily be among Donaire's toughest two fights of his career, which may help justify his absurd #4 position on the Ring's pound for pound list.

Gerson Guerrero out of Donaire fight

Manuel Vargas, who fought for a minimumweight title in his last fight and who has never fought north of flyweight, takes over as the opponent. On the bright side, he has about as much of a chance of winning as Guerrero did - none. I guess that's the upside of Top Rank not even attempting to make any remotely competitive matchups with Donaire.

Dan Rafael's Notebook

I encourage everyone to read it this week, as it's filled will all kinds of great material (some of which I may write on independently, once I get the time). Most interesting tidbits: Michael Katsidis may face Robert Guerrero on BAD on March 27; on April 17, a Pavlik-Martinez / Bute-Miranda doubleheader looks likely; and promoters are working on a Darchinyan-Donaire rematch. In his blog, Rafael also mentions the possibility of a Andre Berto-Paulie Malignaggi Haiti benefit fight, Timothy Bradley-Marcos Maidana, and Zab Judah-Carlos Quintana or Victor Cayo.

Dan Rafael in Vegas: Lots of matchups being discussed

Dan Rafael's blog mentions the following fights being discussed this weekend in Las Vegas: * Ricky Hatton v. the Oscar/Manny winner, obviously * Juan Manuel Lopez and Ivan Calderon possible for the Pavlik/Cotto PPV card in February * Fernando Montiel v. Nonito Donaire in March on Showtime * Winky Wright v. Mikkel Kessler in March/April on HBO * Winky v. Joe Calzaghe (highly unlikely) * Sergio Martinez v. Joe Greene as a co-feature for Berto-Collazo * Jesus Chavez v. Joel Casamayor, Jorge Barrios or Michael Katsidis on Versus in '09
