Hardchaw, Dreaming: Sergio Martinez-Matthew Macklin Preview

+
While Martinez has faced solid opposition in England, Argentina, and the United States—along with some Guardia Civil types in Spain—Macklin has fought fairly limited foes, mostly in the United Kingdom. After more than a decade as a pro, his best results remain a first-round KO over chinny Finn Amin Asikainen, a comfortable points win over fossilized Yori Boy Campas, and an early stoppage of Wayne Elcock in 2009 for the British middleweight title. It is a hell of a jump to go from Elcock and Asikainen to Sergio Martinez. Not even Finn McCool would attempt that. In addition, the only notable southpaw Macklin has faced—Jamie Moore—left him counting atoms in a 2006 bid for a the British light middleweight title. From The Cruelest Sport

Double Shot: Sergio Martinez TKO8 Sergiy Dzinziruk & Andy Lee TKO10 Craig McEwan

Sergio Martinez keeps on doing it – not just winning – but looking more exciting with each outstanding performance. Once known as more of a quick and clever operator, Martinez is getting the job done these days in quite a different manner. The Argentinean southpaw is not your typical modern day prizefighter. The way he holds his hands down low and sticks his chin out, inviting, almost goading incoming fire, Martinez has the swagger of a different era. He would still be a lot of fun if he rode that style to the scorecards, but Maravilla doesn’t seem all that interested in simple results – not when the opportunity to go for the throat is in reach. After Sergio Martinez’ gritty decision over Kelly Pavlik and shocking second round knockout over Paul Williams, questions swirled around who at junior middleweight or the surrounding divisions can beat Martinez–someone who has risen from obscurity to one of the most respected fighters in boxing in less than two years. Dan Rafael's Notebook

10

I encourage everyone to read it this week, as it's filled will all kinds of great material (some of which I may write on independently, once I get the time). Most interesting tidbits: Michael Katsidis may face Robert Guerrero on BAD on March 27; on April 17, a Pavlik-Martinez / Bute-Miranda doubleheader looks likely; and promoters are working on a Darchinyan-Donaire rematch. In his blog, Rafael also mentions the possibility of a Andre Berto-Paulie Malignaggi Haiti benefit fight, Timothy Bradley-Marcos Maidana, and Zab Judah-Carlos Quintana or Victor Cayo.
