The speculated heavyweight fight between James Toney (69-4-3 43 KO's) and Samuel Peter (26-1 22 KO's) has been made official. The two will be hooking it up on September 2 on Showtime.
Samuel Peter is a thunderous power puncher who last September lost a close decision to current IBF champ Wladimir Klitschko. Peter dropped his foe twice in the fifth round and once in the tenth. Since to loss to Klitschko he has won a 10 round decision over Robert Hawkins and scored a first round KO over Julius Long. The former Nigerian Olympic Team member will be looking for a huge statement win to set up a possible rematch with Wladimir.
James "Lights Out" Toney may be 37 but he still fights like a man with plenty of gas left in the tank. Since moving up to the heavyweight division Toney has scored a TKO win over Evander Holyfield, a decision win over Rydell Booker, a no contest with John Ruiz (which was originally a decision win for Toney prior to a positive steroid test), a decision win over Dominick Guinn, and draw this March with Hasim Rahman.
The fight is most likely going to take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA.
UPDATE: it looks like this fight is also going to be a WBC eliminator. So assuming Rahman wins his bout against Maskaev we're looking at a potential Toney/Rahman rematch. Then again it could be Maskaev taking on Peter. It's basically looking like a four man tournament. Let's just hope we get some good fights out of it.
