Update on the condition of Victor Burgos

Reports out of California are that Victor Burgos underwent immediate brain surgery last night following his fight against Vic Darchinyan to remove a blood clot. At last report, Burgos, 32, is still in an induced coma, but he has shown post-surgery improvement in the ICU at UCLA Medical Center in Torrance.

Physicians noted that the quick arrival at the hospital was critical for his chances of recovery from the injuries sustained, so the crew at the Home Depot Center last night should be commended for their work. Tragedy may have been avoided thanks to their quick handling of the matter.

Don King, who promotes Burgos, said, "I urge everyone to join me in prayer for Victor Burgos and his family. I know he's fighting right now to come through this because a brave fighter is what he has always been."

While it looks like Burgos should make a strong recovery, the fact remains that that fight should have been stopped long before referee Jon Schorle intervened in the 12th round. Pride is one thing, but Burgos took an unnecessary amount of punishment, and someone should have had the common sense to get him out of there.

We'll keep you posted on the situation when any news becomes available, and we again send out our best wishes for a full recovery to Victor Burgos.
