Saturday Night's Winners: Pacquiao, Mijares, Chagaev, Sosa

Saturday night proved to be a night of mild surprises, as Ruslan Chagaev, Cristian Mijares and Edgar Sosa all won, and so did Manny Pacquiao.

All stills I've seen of the Mijares/Arce fight show Arce looking like he was beaten to a pulp, which is exactly how it was described in the liveblog comments. I'm not at all surprised that Arce lost the fight, maybe a little surprised that it doesn't sound like he was very competitive. Arce is a showman and a fantastic one at that, but his skills are really good, not great, and Mijares is a good fighter.

Edgar Sosa scored an "upset" on Brian Viloria. Viloria is a tough nut to crack. Everyone I've read says the fight was very good.

The "biggest news" to mainstream media is that Ruslan Chagaev beat Nikolai Valuev in Russia, ending Valuev's 46-fight win streak and capturing the WBA heavyweight title from the giant in a majority decision. Chagaev is an OK fighter, maybe someone who could be the next Oleg Maskaev. I figure we'll probably see a rematch, since I don't think Don King is ready to give up on Valuev just yet.

The staff P4P will be updated sometime this week, and let's not forget (as if we could) that we're just mere weeks away from Floyd and Oscar. Also don't forget that de la Hoya/Mayweather 24/7 starts tomorrow night on HBO following The Sopranos and Entourage. I just sounded like an HBO shill, right? I could totally do that.
