Wright "considers" rematch with Taylor

Scott Christ is the managing editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2006.

Box_winky_195_mediumWith Jeff Lacy bowing out after being harshly insulted that his OLYMPIC PEDIGREE was not enough to get him millions of dollars to fight Jermain Taylor, fellow Floridian Winky Wright is "thinking about" stepping into the breach on November 15.

I really like the language here. Winky "would consider" it. He won't fight Taylor at 168, but maybe a catchweight of 164.

What he's saying, essentially, is he likes the idea, but only if Taylor agrees to everything Wright wants and also probably gives Wink a 60-40 purse split, because Winky Wright is a big star that sells tickets, don'thca know.

What he's REALLY, really, really, REALLY saying is that he won't be fighting Jermain Taylor in November, and he's prepared to do all that and then shrug his shoulders and say, "Oh well! We tried! The life goes on! Ob-la-di!"

I have always been a Winky Wright fan. I really have. But this song-and-dance routine is beyond tired. He hasn't fought since summer of 2007, there are seemingly no plans for him to get in the ring this year, but his name keeps coming up. At what point has Winkin' Ron really just done too much damage to his career? What's the point where he's forced to accept an ESPN2 headlining spot against a bum just to get some work in and his name back out there?

The more fights he Winks his way out of, the closer we get to that. He's not a guy that's so popular or compelling to watch that HBO or Showtime would give him a date against a mid-level opponent, because no one's going to watch it. Remember when he fought Quartey? Yeah, that went over like a fart in a church.

C'mon, Wink, find a fight. Just get in there and do it.
