Devon Alexander recently talked to Ryan Burton over at Boxing Scene about his future and his upcoming fight. At first, Devon wanted to travel outside of St. Louis for his next fight against Marcos Maidana but ultimately decided against it.
"I originally wanted to go away to fight but I am a big draw in St. Louis and Maidana isn't a big draw in the States. I don't care where it is at. I am happy that my hometown fans will be able to go to the fight."
Alexander has benefitted from a severe case of homecooking in his last two fights. Most people thought that he lost to both Andriy Kotelnik and Lucas Matthysse. The second loss to Matthysse really does not bode well for Alexander in his fight against Marcos Maidana. Marcos could be thought of as a crude Matthysse with a bit of a mean streak. The constant pressure from Maidana will hopefully overcome Alexander's short punches and let Marcos run out of dodge with a victory. Unlike Amir Khan, Maidana will have to overcome local judges who will give any close round to Alexander. I think Maidana has a good chance of winning this fight, even with the hometown judges for Alexander.
Maybe that's not realistic because Matthysse threw more punches, landed harder punches, knocked down Alexander, and still lost. In light of all of that, massive props to Maidana for taking this fight in the Lou, but I think he knows he has to KO Alexander to get the victory. I hope that Maidana has monster power at the new weight and that Alexander becomes slow with stamina problems.
Alexander is looking beyond his fight with Maidana and commented on what he would want for his next fight.
"We heard Maidana was moving up to 147 so we wanted to fight him. Berto and Ortiz are fighting. I would love to fight the winner of that fight as well."
I think both of those fighters can destroy Alexander. If Victor Conte can fix Berto's stamina issues, then I think he will get the better of Ortiz in the rematch. The theoretical Berto-Alexander would be very interesting and one I would frankly want to see. But on the other hand, a Maidana-Ortiz matchup would be all kinds of awesome with some great pre-fight trash talk. What do you guys think of the potential matchups between Ortiz, Berto, Maidana, and Alexander?
