Steve Kim reports that there is a possibility that a January 28 fight between WBC junior welterweight titlist Erik Morales and Danny Garcia could happen on HBO Boxing After Dark, and has notes on a couple of other fighters who have been linked together this week.
Morales (52-7, 36 KO) claimed the vacant WBC 140-pound belt with a win over Pablo Cesar Cano on September 17 in Las Vegas, and a month later, Garcia (22-0, 14 KO) topped Kendall Holt via split decision on the Hopkins vs Dawson card in Los Angeles.
Both fighters are tied to Golden Boy, and 23-year-old Garcia is at the do-or-die stage for at title chase at this point. Holt is still a decent contender, and that's a good win, and he'd have a good style matchup for Morales, as frankly, most of the talented 140-pounders would, since Morales really isn't a junior welterweight and isn't hard to hit.
Morales has stated that he'll be back in January, but said in late November that he wasn't looking for a big fight, rather a tune-up to test his ability to go back to 135 pounds and chase a fifth title.

If Morales vs Garcia can be put together, it's a good fight, with a pair of guys who are top ten in a division that is about to experience a likely exodus of top talent, as Amir Khan, Timothy Bradley, Marcos Maidana, and Devon Alexander are expected to leave the division, with Lucas Matthysse possibly joining them. The cupboard could soon be very bare at junior welterweight.
Yea or nay to this fight? If you take out all the guys who are on their way out at 140, I'd personally have these guys both right around the top five area, so I think the quality's there, and Morales doesn't make for bad fights. But would you expect much of the fight, and would you be actively excited to see it?
