Video Hype: Showtime Spot for Bantamweight Tournament Finals

As much as I love this tournament, and love Saturday's card, I have to nitpick. I have to quibble. Saying that this determines "one true champion" is a farce, and of course the people at Showtime know that. It's good advertising, but at the same time this is a fight card going out to the dedicated boxing fans, most of whom (I like to imagine, anyway) know better.

Nonito Donaire is the top-ranked bantamweight in the world. None of these guys have been the top-ranked bantamweight at any time since this tournament started. Donaire didn't get there by coasting, either. If nothing else, his February blast-out of Fernando Montiel, who was either ranked at the top or very near the top of the division at the time, was remarkable and has earned him his status as the universally regarded No. 1 bantamweight in the world.

Joseph Agbeko-Abner Mares is a great fight. I have them ranked No. 3 and No. 2 at bantamweight, respectively. But a win for either, no matter how it happens, will not vault them above Donaire in anyone's eyes except the eyes of those desperate to add false legitimacy to something that doesn't need to be fibbed about to be made significant. Combined with the main event, the consolation fight between Yonnhy Perez and Vic Darchinyan pits a couple of exciting, top ten guys in the division, too. This isn't like Pacquiao-Margarito for a "world championship in an eighth weight class!!! History will be made!" -- this tournament is the real deal, lived up to the hype and the promise in the first round, and has those in the know excited by being exactly what it is. It's a rare case, but there's no reason to overhype this time.
