Scott Christ is the managing editor of Bad Left Hook and has been covering boxing for SB Nation since 2006.

Earlier, TMZ reported that Oscar de la Hoya had checked into a rehabilitation facility in California, but we said to treat it as a rumor until something official came out. I said that because I assumed if it were true, Oscar or Golden Boy Promotions would in fact follow up.

That has happened. Oscar de la Hoya released an official statement to TMZ this evening:

"After doing an honest evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws.

"Throughout my career and my life, I have always met all challenges head-on, and this is no different. I am confident that with the support of my family and friends, I will become a stronger, healthier person.

"I ask for respect and privacy as my family and I go through this process."

Now, I know that in the past I have made clear that I'm not particularly a fan of Oscar de la Hoya, but that's his professional life and persona. This is different. Oscar is taking responsibility for something that usually a fighter or other celebrity would need some kind of scandal to take on with honesty. Good for him, and Bad Left Hook wishes Oscar all the best.
