Erik Morales was scheduled to return on July 30 on HBO pay-per-view, but the Mexican star says the fight has been postponed. Morales and Golden Boy were targeting a rematch with Marcos Maidana, but had difficulty negotiating with the Argentine puncher, who won a narrow decision on April 9 over Morales:
"For now, my fight scheduled for July 30 in Las Vegas has been postponed because Marcos Maidana was asking for a lot of money for a rematch. [Golden Boy Promotions] wanted a rematch with Maidana after my controversial defeat in April in Las Vegas, but he was asking for a lot more money and we'll face another opponent."
Maidana seems to have made his mind up what he wants to do this year, and that's rematch Amir Khan. That almost surely isn't happening on Khan's July 23 date, but could be in play later this year. The WBA is naming Maidana the mandatory challenger to Khan's title, as Maidana once again holds the interim title.
You know, as inspiring as Morales' one-eyed battle against time and power was in April, we're less than two months removed from that fight and, I don't know -- I still don't have any great desire to see Morales back in the ring. It felt like an unlikely last great performance more than, like, a career rebirth. Morales is 34 and the Maidana bout was by far his best performance since he started his comeback in 2010. In his previous three bouts, he looked game and gutsy, but overall quite mediocre. Against Maidana, he was "El Terrible" again, or as close as that's going to get anymore.
But is the demand there to see him again? What say you?
