He can't even buy a beer in the United States, but now he has his own HBO "Greatest Hits" video package.
Not mentioned is that the belt Alvarez won was near as bogus as they come, as he missed the contracted catchweight but still got to fight for the belt anyway, a belt that had been vacated from its previous bogus owner (Manny Pacquiao), and Alvarez won said bogus belt from a guy who hadn't ever seriously fought in the division. BUT HEY! It is what it is what it is what it is, and "Canelo" Alvarez is very clearly positioned as one of HBO's Stars of the Future -- TODAY! And he's not a bad choice by any means. Young, charismatic, fights hard, has a fanbase at 20, and people just gravitate toward him. He's got "it."
But -- and I'm purposely taking this too seriously for reasons I admit I cannot quite explain at the moment -- maybe let's wait on a "Greatest Hits" until he beats someone really good. This stacks up about as well as a John Duddy greatest hits for the time being. Still, the next guy on the schedule is a good one, and then he turns 21, so he can buy beer and call out Floyd Mayweather Jr, which he's been doing for about a year already. The kid's nuts. I like him.
