Lem Satterfield reports that the potential fight between Julio Cesar Chavez Jr and Peter Manfredo Jr could be moved from its current working date of September 24 to November 19, which is a bit more interesting than it seems on the surface.
If the fight were on 9/24 on HBO, it would receive the bump in viewership that usually comes with a previous week's PPV replay, as Floyd Mayweather Jr returns to face Victor Ortiz on 9/17. But that could also work for 11/19, as Manny Pacquiao is in action on November 12 against Juan Manuel Marquez, which is a Top Rank show.
So there may well be good reason to read into this and assume that Manny Pacquiao might be taking his talents back to HBO, or that Showtime could be making a move for Chavez. JCC Jr did terrific numbers for his June 4 win over Sebastian Zbik, and at this point I think either network would be thrilled to have him for his name value alone. Not many fighters out there deliver 1.5 million viewers against an unknown opponent.
Moving the fight to 11/19 isn't a bad idea or anything, but I'm not seeing this as simply a change in date. Something bigger than this fight could be at play here in the ongoing HBO vs Showtime TV boxing war, which impacts a lot more than just this fight.
