As we discussed earlier, Kelly Pavlik wants another tune-up fight before making something big for late this year or early 2012, and Yahoo! Sports reporter Kevin Iole says this evening that Bob Arum is indeed trying to make a fight for the former middleweight champion for August:
In other news, @BobArum said Kelly Pavlik will fight in August in tuneup, in Youngstown area, likely on ShoBox.
The idea of Pavlik returning to ShoBox, which is a program meant to showcase up-and-coming fighters, is a little weird. I mean, I don't really mind, and ShoBox is still nowhere near abandoning its purpose the way Boxing After Dark has, but basically what we're going to wind up with is Pavlik against another club fighter and/or faded veteran in a total showcase fight, televised because Showtime is probably where Pavlik winds up fighting in whatever big fight he takes after, be it Bute or Kessler or anyone else. Showtime is the home of the super middleweights.
Hopefully they pair it with one or two of Top Rank's actual prospects, too, and maybe bring a few more eyes to the show than usual. It's not a bad idea, but man, here we are and we're talking about Kelly Pavlik back on ShoBox.
