Lem Satterfield of BoxingScene.com reports that Top Rank and Golden Boy are discussing a possible September 10 fight on HBO between Yuriorkis Gamboa and Daniel Ponce de Leon, which if it does wind up happening, would be the first co-promotion between the companies in years.
"Yes. We're considering it for Sept. 10 in Atlantic City. We've talked with Golden Boy, and they're amenable to making the fight with Ponce De Leon, now we're talking to HBO to make sure that we have the necessary funds to do the fight," Arum told BoxingScene.com.
Gamboa (20-0, 16 KO) has the date set with HBO, likely at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Ponce de Leon (41-3, 34 KO) is coming off of a very controversial decision loss to Adrien Broner on March 5. Gamboa demolished Jorge Solis later that same month.
It's a good fight between top ten featherweights, but style-wise I have to assume that most would expect the hyper-quick Gamboa to be a bad matchup for Ponce de Leon, who has made adjustments in his career, but is a very slow guy with heavy hands.
Thumbs up or down for this one?
