Dan Rafael of ESPN.com tweeted today that the October 15 HBO pay-per-view fight between light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins and Chad Dawson appears to have found a home:
The Oct. 15 HBO PPV fight between @realbhop and @badchaddawson likely will take place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. #boxing
Promoters Golden Boy and Gary Shaw are taking a bit of a risk here. Both guys are northeast fighters, but neither have drawn in the States (even at home) in quite a while. The Prudential Center has become a great fight building, but it has also mostly thrived on the Polish fanbase in the area for Tomasz Adamek fights. Zab Judah, a star from Brooklyn, drew "eh" crowds fighting there.
Many expected the fight would end up in Quebec, with Jean Pascal on the undercard. They're already looking at a very hard sell on pay-per-view, and now they might find themselves with a small live crowd too. It's a gamble, but hopefully it does pay off.
