Rick Reeno reports that Floyd Mayweather Jr has invited Victor Ortiz's press rivals Brandon Rios and Robert Garcia (the brother of Ortiz's trainer, Danny Garcia) to attend the fight on Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
"Brandon Rios and Robert Garcia, I want to make sure they have tickets to attend the show," Mayweather said.
One reporter asked, "Why?" Floyd replied, "Why not? I just want to make sure they have tickets for the show."
I mean, this is pretty nasty. Rios has viciously trash talked Ortiz many times in the press, while the rivalry between Robert and Danny Garcia is reminiscent of the old rivalry between Floyd's uncle Roger and father Floyd Sr. Ortiz, of course, was previously trained by Robert, and worked with Rios in their younger days. That has long since gone incredibly sour.
If there's one thing besides boxing that Floyd really does know, it's the weight of family rivalry. No word if Rios and/or Garcia intend to take the invitation and the tickets, but it wouldn't shock me if they showed up and heckled. Neither of them are shy about controversy or saying what they think or anything like that.
Rios is scheduled to fight again on December 10. No opponent has been named.
