Golden Boy Promotions is busy this weekend, and not just with the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight. Yesterday, the company signed Mexican junior welterweight Humberto Soto. Today, Devon Alexander joined the fold. Dan Rafael of ESPN.com tweeted this photo from the Mayweather vs Ortiz weigh-in:
Rafael said, "Devon Alexander, Kevin Cuningham and their new promoter. Done deal."
Alexander (22-1, 13 KO) was considered Golden Boy-bound almost from the moment his deal with Don King expired earlier this year. The St. Louis native has a good fanbase at home, which was attractive to GBP, and they've worked on Alexander fights in the past, including his most recent bout, a very controversial split decision win over Lucas Matthysse in Missouri.
The 24-year-old Alexander is moving up to welterweight soon, and has engaged in a war of words with another Golden Boy fighter, Paulie Malignaggi. That fight won't be made this year, because HBO doesn't have the money in the budget for it, but could very well happen in 2012. Malignaggi says he won't go to St. Louis, feeling that he'd get robbed on Alexander's turf, but Alexander has indicated he'd go to Malignaggi's home base in New York. Whether that would happen or not is another story, and we now have a good chance of finding out how serious Alexander really is.
