Tomorrow night's Mayweather vs Ortiz pay-per-view will open with a very interesting fight between a couple of junior welterweight breakout candidates. The ten-rounder will pit Mayweather Promotions prospect Jessie Vargas (16-0, 9 KO) against the Goossen Tutor-promoted Josesito Lopez (29-3, 17 KO) in what we feel is a well-matched bout, and well-timed for both fighters.
Not surprisingly, the undefeated Vargas has been made the favorite on the sportsbooks:
Vargas, 22, has been called "the future of boxing" by Mayweather, which is promotional bluster and a way to get Jessie's name out there, but he's a legitimate good prospect who has fought good opposition for where he's at in his career. The 27-year-old Lopez hasn't had that kind of promotional push, but earlier this year he knocked off another unbeaten prospect, Mike Dallas Jr, on Friday Night Fights. That January bout was the last time Lopez was in the ring, and now he gets a chance to truly break out if he can pull the mild upset over Vargas.
