Richard Schaefer tells Lem Satterfield of RingTV.com that Victor Ortiz wasn't bothered at all during today's weigh-in, which featured a scuffle with opponent Floyd Mayweather Jr in which Mayweather poked Ortiz in the throat and choked him a little bit:
"Victor just kept telling Floyd Mayweather, 'You know you're going down, you know you're going down,'" said Golden Boy Promotions CEO, Richard Schaefer, who, at one point, stood between the two fighters.
"I mean, there was no raising of the voice. Just calm. With no hype. Just like, 'You know you're going down.' I've never seen a fighter in this magnitude of a fight who displayed such total self-control as Ortiz did. He just does not seem fazed by the magnitude of the event."
This is the first mega event of Ortiz's career, at least as a main event fighter. But he has been an HBO main eventer before, and he's also been around the major events many times, including as an undercard fighteron the Oscar De La Hoya vs Manny Pacquiao card in December 2008.
I'm not surprised that Ortiz isn't sweating much right now. As I mentioned the other day, Ortiz is so goofy in his demeanor that I'm not sure he much cares about any of this stuff. He's hard to get a read on, because he always seems to be in his character. He's always ready to flash a smile, always ready to change that to Serious Face. Who could tell if Ortiz was rattled on a stage?
