With Lucas Matthysse having pulled out of his September 17 fight with Erik Morales, Dan Rafael of ESPN.com reports that Morales asked Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer to get him a rematch with Marcos Maidana, but it's a no-go:
Maidana (30-2, 27 KO) was scheduled to fight on August 27, but his opponent Robert Guerrero suffered an injury and was forced to pull out of that fight. The focus for the Argentine fighter then turned to heading home for a September fight, which is set for September 23 against Spain-based Russian Petr Petrov (29-2-2, 13 KO), whose record is built on very soft touches.
Tonight, we reached out to Team Maidana about the news.
"We were just informed about that possibility, but Golden Boy was not even sure about a possible purse for Marcos as they already had a established budget for the whole card," said Maidana's manager, Sebastian Contursi.
"Besides, we have everything organized for Marcos to fight on Friday, Septmber 23 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. We already have contracts signed for venue, TV, opponent and every other aspect for the fight vs Petrov."
Maidana himself isn't dismissing a rematch before the end of 2011.
"Morales should win on September 17 and I will win on the 23rd, so let's do the rematch before the end of the year," Maidana told Bad Left Hook.
Anthony Crolla, as we speculated earlier, does appear to be in the running to face Morales, but he's said to be a last resort option if Golden Boy can't find something better. Given the notice and the high-profile nature of the fight, it's hard to imagine anything bigger coming along.
