Even though reports are saying that Golden Boy CEO Richard Schafer has been informed of Andre Berto's injury, it seems that Team Ortiz is being optimistic on Berto's status according to Jake Donovan of Boxing Scene. It seems that the camp is going to go on as planned until they get news confirming that Andre Berto cannot make the February 11th fight date.
"We heard that he's hurt, but so far it's not conclusive" Rolando Arellano, Ortiz' manager, informed Boxingscene.com. "We're acting as if the biggest, baddest Andre Berto is going to walk out of the hospital and show up ready to fight on February 11 on Showtime."
It seems that Victor Ortiz is going to keep on his schedule until the announcement is official, which is the only logical move.
Now I hope that Victor Ortiz's management is currently on the phone trying to line up his next fight, but Ortiz should be trying to keep in fight shape. If by some miracle Andre Berto can make the February 11th date, then you want Victor Ortiz to be ready to go. Stopping camp at this point could put a fighter in a bad frame of mind, especially if he is starting to come down in weight. Also, if Berto only needs a week or two to recover from his injury, then you will not want to stop camp if you are Victor Ortiz.
I will put out the disclaimer that this action does not suggest that Andre Berto is not injured. Team Ortiz is merely being cautious, planning on the fight happening until an official announcement is made. That being said, I suspect that Lou DiBella will be making an official statement either later tonight or some time tomorrow.
