Boxing fans will receive a Christmas present three days early this year, as Tomasz Adamek and Steve Cunningham will fight in a heavyweight rematch of their cruiserweight classic on December 22. The fight will be televised on NBC.

Odlanier Solis was basically pulled out of the fight yesterday, and Keith Idec reports at BoxingScene.com that there may be issues with Solis' co-promoter, Ahmet Oner of Arena-Box.

Adamek (47-2, 29 KO) and Cunningham (25-4, 12 KO) engaged in a war for the cruiserweight championship in December 2008 on the old Versus network, a true Fight of the Year contender in what was a pretty good year for great fights. Fans wanted a rematch right away (wewantarematch.com still exists), but it didn't happen, as Adamek fought just twice more as cruiserweight champion before moving up to heavyweight.

Cunningham stayed at cruiserweight, and was for a while fighting in Europe under Sauerland Event's promotion, but has recently come back to the States as a heavyweight with Main Events.

You can't say much about this that isn't predictable. It's a great fight, a wonderful "replacement" for the Solis bout, and though it may not be the 2008 war all over again, it should be a very exciting fight between two very exciting fighters. There's no reason to not be excited about this fight.
