Derry Mathews came out of his quarterfinal matchup with two bad cuts, and somehow was allowed to fight on in today's Prizefighter tournament. It proved to be a bad idea, as the cuts were quickly reopened, leaving the tough Mathews in a no-win situation, eventually outpointed by Terry Flannigan, 29-27 on all three cards.
Mathews (31-8-1, 16 KO) was the betting favorite to win the tournament, but cuts suffered against Spence really did him in, even though he swept his quarterfinal matchup. Flannigan (17-0, 4 KO) now is in a good position to score a big upset tournament win, as he awaits the Crolla-Sykes II winner in the final fight.
