Tonight at 9:45 pm EST on HBO Boxing After Dark from the Wynn in Las Vegas, we get a rare Top Rank vs Golden Boy main event, as Vanes Martirosyan takes on Erislandy Lara in a WBC junior middleweight eliminator, with the winner in line for a shot at Canelo Alvarez.
Martirosyan (32-0, 20 KO) and Lara (17-1-1, 11 KO) have both been chomping at the bit for a big fight, and while this one was originally scheduled as the co-feature for this show before Orlando Salido pulled out of his fight with Mikey Garcia, this is definitely a matchup worthy of a Boxing After Dark main event, as we've got two guys who are taking the risk in order to land the big opportunity. Neither of them has faced top competition recently, but both insist that's not by design.
Staff Picks: Vanes Martirosyan vs Erislandy Lara
Garcia (29-0, 25 KO) is still in action tonight, as the featherweight prospect/contender will take on former super bantamweight titlist Jonathan Barros (34-3-1, 18 KO) in a 10-round co-feature. Garcia is hoping to win and set up a rescheduled date with Salido, who still holds the WBO featherweight title and says he'd like the fight to happen in February 2013.
Brent Brookhouse will be handling the round-by-round duties and the post-fight recaps for this show tonight, so join us as we keep you up to date on both of tonight's big cards.
