BoxingScene.com reports that Bernard Hopkins will return to the ring on March 9, 2013, live on Showtime, facing one of three light heavyweight titlists: Tavoris Cloud (IBF), Beibut Shumenov (WBA), or Nathan Cleverly (WBO).
Hopkins (52-6-2, 32 KO) will turn 48 on January 15, and will look to break his own record as the oldest man to ever win a world title, which he set in May 2011 by beating Jean Pascal for the WBC light heavyweight title. Hopkins has fought twice since then, going to a two-round no contest with Chad Dawson in October 2011, and then losing to Dawson in April of this year.
Cleverly would seem to be the front-runner, as he was featured tonight on Showtime with a win over Shawn Hawk, and there has been plenty of press chatter about that fight on both sides of the pond. Shumenov has also worked with Golden Boy Promotions, while Cloud is promoted by Don King, and figures to be the most difficult -- if also most attractive -- fight of the three to make.
Of the three options, what would you most like to see?
