HBO has finalized a January 19 tripleheader that could be plenty long on memorable action. Orlando Salido will defend his WBO featherweight title against Mikey Garcia in the main event, and today, two more fights were solidified.
Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO) will defend the WBA middleweight title against Gabriel Rosado, a junior middleweight contender whose rise has been featured on NBC Sports in 2012, with wins over Jesus Soto Karass, Sechew Powell, and Charles Whittaker. That last victory was supposed to net Rosado a shot at IBF junior middleweight titlist Cornelius "K9" Bundrage, but that hasn't really come close to materializing yet, and Rosado is taking a big risk moving up to face Golovkin instead.
Golovkin made his HBO debut on September 1, wowing viewers with his destruction of Grzegorz Proksa, but also turning in a very low TV rating.
Also on the show, Rocky Martinez (26-1-1, 16 KO) will make the first defense of his WBO super featherweight title against Juan Carlos Burgos (30-1, 20 KO). Martinez won the vacant title against Miguel Beltran Jr on the Chavez Jr-Martinez undercard, while Burgos is coming off of 2012 wins over Cristobal Cruz and Cesar Vazquez.
All in all, it's really a hell of a fight card, and sets the bar high for HBO in 2012. The week after this one, they'll headline with Andre Ward vs Kelly Pavlik.
