Nathan Cleverly has a finalized opponent for his bout on Saturday night on Showtime Extreme, as he'll be facing Shawn Hawk on the Mares vs Moreno undercard at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Hawk (23-2-1, 17 KO) isn't a serious contender in any way, but this is short notice and Cleverly basically had to fight someone. Still, it's upsetting that after facing Tommy Karpency earlier this year, which was absurd, Cleverly's "next opponents" have all been on a similar level.
First there was Robin Krasniqi, a fight for the summer that fell apart and wound up not taking place at all. Then Cleverly was scheduled to face Vyacheslav Uzelkov in Cardiff. That fight was pulled in order to send Cleverly to the US, where he was slated to face Ryan Coyne. And now it's Hawk, a 28-year-old fighter whose record has been mostly built in the rings of North Dakota and Idaho, along with a few fights in Washington and South Carolina.
In fact, taken out of those locations, Hawk is 1-2-1 for his career, going 1-0-1 in California, 0-1 in Philly, and 0-1 in Montreal, which was his last fight on June 8, as he dropped a wide 12-round decision to prospect Eleider Alvarez.
Cleverly's WBO light heavyweight title will be on the line.
