Danny Jacobs' boxing comeback continued with his second win since returning in October, as he powered through Chris Fitzpatrick in the opening Showtime bout tonight from Madison Square Garden.
Jacobs (24-1, 21 KO) alternated between seeming like he was trying to get rounds in, and turning up the heat in a big way. Fitzpatrick (15-3, 6 KO) was as game as you could hope, and he stood up well to Jacobs' assaults, particularly in the fifth round, when he was battered around the ring but stayed on his feet.
Wisely, his team decided that was enough, and they retired from the bout after that one-sided frame. It was the right call.
"I'm back as a contender. We do want to step up accordingly, we don't want to jump the gun," Jacobs said after the fight. It's likely he'll return on February 9 in Brooklyn, part of the Garcia-Judah card on Showtime.
