Sky Sports reports today that Martin Murray has confirmed he will be facing Sergio Martinez for the middleweight world championship on April 27 in Argentina, Martinez's first fight in his native country since 2002.
Murray (25-0-1, 11 KO) easily dispatched novice Jorge Navarro two weekends ago on the Hatton-Senchenko undercard, which was said to be his final hurdle before landing the Sergio bout.
Here's what promoter Ricky Hatton had to say:
"These are very exciting times for Martin. It has been a work in progress for him. I am very proud of the job Hatton Promotions have done with him. I think that it is a credit to Hatton Promotions for making make such fights for him. We have come a long way in a short space of time."
Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KO) has a two-fight plan for 2012, starting with Murray in April. After that, it's expected he'll face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in a rematch on September 14, a year after their largely one-sided but, in the end, thrilling encounter in Las Vegas.
Martinez, who turns 38 in February, is currently recovering from knee surgery.
