Boxing is back on TV this weekend, with a short schedule as we get 2013 underway. There's a solid ESPN Friday Night Fights doubleheader for the season premiere of that series, and two cards from Mexico on Saturday night.
Here's the full rundown.
Friday, January 4
ESPN2 / ESPN3.com / ESPN Deportes, 10:00 pm EST, Rances Barthelemy vs Arash Usmanee, Jonathan Gonzalez vs Derek Ennis. Here we go! Back to having a Friday night card to watch on U.S. TV basically every week from now until the summer is about to fade into fall. Like always, we'll kick off the year in Florida, but not in Key West this time around, as the Magic City Casino in Miami will play host to a matchup between unbeaten super featherweight prospects. Cuba's Rances Barthelemy (17-0, 11 KO) will have home field advantage over Montreal's Arash Usmanee (20-0, 10 KO) in an eliminator for the IBF No. 2 ranking at 130 pounds. You may recall Barthelemy, 26, from his win last February on Friday Night Fights over another then-unbeaten prospect, Hylon Williams Jr, outpointing Williams over eight rounds. In the co-feature, Puerto Rican 154-pound prospect Jonathan Gonzalez (15-0-1, 13 KO) looks to get back in the win column against Philly's Derek Ennis (23-3-1, 13 KO). Ennis, 32, was on the sidelines in 2012, and hasn't fought since October 2011. His losses have all been early stoppages. Gonzalez, 23, came in overweight and out of shape for a dull draw with Sergiy Dzinziruk in September, which was his last fight. His team is hoping to get back on the right track starting here. Bad Left Hook will have live coverage.
Saturday, January 5
Televisa (Mexico), 10:00 pm EST, Jesus Silvestre vs Ganigan Lopez, Janeth Perez vs Irma Garcia, Edgar Puerta vs Abraham Rodriguez.
CadenaTres (Mexico), 10:00 pm EST, Efrain Perez vs Omar Lina, Ariel Guzman vs Saul Juarez.
