If Manny Pacquiao is able to defeat Juan Manuel Marquez in their fourth fight on Saturday night, the plan is still to have him return on April 20 against Brandon Rios, according to RingTV.com, who spoke with Rios' manager Cameron Dunkin about it:
"If Pacquiao wins, then I think that it's a doable fight," said Dunkin. "They have said April 20."
Rios (31-0-1, 23 KO) was quickly mentioned as a likely Pacquiao opponent following his October 13 win over Mike Alvarado, a thrilling slugfest at 140 pounds, Rios' first major fight at that weight. And promoter Bob Arum has been talking about Pacquiao-Rios since Rios broke out in the lightweight division in 2011, realizing that Rios' all-action style has serious star potential.
Personally, I'm not totally thrilled with the Pacquiao-Rios idea right now, but it's understandable. Pacquiao is quickly running out of opponents, if we don't pretend that Floyd Mayweather is an actual possibility, and Top Rank doesn't really have anyone else at 140 for Rios to fight, either. There's no doubt it would be an exciting fight for as long as it lasts, as Rios can't help but make exciting fights unless he's in with someone like Richard Abril, and Pacquiao ain't Abril in style.
If Manny does win on Saturday, what do you think of Rios as a next opponent? Is it a somewhat desperation move from Top Rank, given their lack of notable fighters at Manny's weight, or is the potential for action plenty good enough for you? And would you give Rios a serious shot moving up to 147 against Pacquiao?
