Yuriorkis Gamboa is happy to be returning to the ring tomorrow night with new promoter 50 Cent, who has expertly guided him back to old promoter Top Rank's Pacquiao-Marquez IV undercard, but the big news, apparently, comes from Bob Arum, who is promising a special entrance for Gamboa when he faces Michael Farenas tomorrow night, in the final bout before Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez take the ring.
From BoxingScene.com:
"You are going to see when Yuriorkis Gamboa enters the ring on Saturday night an entrance like you’ve never seen before. It’s going to blow the socks off everyone and that’s something you’re going to see a lot more of in the future."
Now, look, a few things. I don't know what Bob Arum might think will blow my socks off, or yours, but if it's a guy rapping, we've seen plenty of that. If it's more elaborate, then I don't know if it'll fit in the MGM Grand's usually small walkway.
Not a month ago, viewers were awed by Sylvester Stallone yelling at Wladimir Klitschko, who then made his custom enormous entrance. And Klitschko has something new and stupidly spectacular every fight, too.
If the Gamboa/50 Cent entrance blows my socks off, I will admit it. But I'm lowering my expectations here. I just don't see what they can do that would be so special, but hopefully for their sake, it isn't booed. Also, I want to note that I'm all for elaborate entrances. Creating atmosphere in a building is a good thing. You're never going to see guys walk out in their tiny shorts with no music again, so let that go. Embrace the ridiculous! It fits right in!
