Javier Fortuna may not have lived up to his high-end expectations tonight, but he got the job done, beating Ireland and Team Snooki's Patrick Hyland by unanimous decision on scores of 118-110, 116-112, and 115-113. BLH scored it 116-112 for Fortuna.
Fortuna (21-0, 15 KO) was very tentative in the early going, but so was Hyland (27-1, 12 KO). The fight picked up only in spots, mostly when it got chippy. The two had a heated staredown at yesterday's weigh-in, and that came back here and there, with Fortuna shouting "woo!" when throwing combinations, which seemed to annoy Hyland, and Fortuna also throwing after the bell on a couple of occasions.
Both men connected with low blows in the fight, Fortuna flopped late and was warned for spitting out the mouthpiece when he did, and Hyland also executed a pretty nice takedown of the Dominican at one point.
Fortuna, 23, is quite talented, but his performance tonight may not have won him many fans. He came off a bit obnoxious at various points, and didn't live up to his hype as a highly-touted prospect. But that is in part credit to Hyland, too, who proved his toughness and that he can fight, and if he'd thrown more punches, he may have possibly been able to pull off the upset here. But he didn't, so he didn't.
