Crystina Poncher of Top Rank caught up with Robert Garcia and asked him a little bit about the newest misfit toy in his Oxnard gym, former middleweight champ Kelly Pavlik.
On Pavlik's adjustment to the new settings:
"You know what, it was great. The first day that he came in, we sat down and talked before we even went into the gym. We talked, and we asked him, 'Why are you here?' He didn't say it's because Cameron (Dunkin) sent me here, or my dad wants me here, he said, 'It's because I know I can still do it, and I want to be back at where I was a few years ago.' So that was the answer I was waiting to hear. We started working out and he's enjoying it, he's loving it. There was a few concerns being that he's the only white in my gym, but he's actually -- he's doing really good. He gets along with everybody. Plays around, jokes around. One thing that Cameron told me, he doesn't do (that), he's just very serious when it comes to training, he doesn't even want music turned on. And it's sort of the opposite. He's enjoying it. He's loving it."
On what's next for Pavlik:
"We can't see anything right now, because we've been working for three weeks. So it'll be a few months before we can even get back in the ring. There's no names or anything. If it's 160 or 168, there's big names out there. He's one or two fights away from those big fights. He knows, we know, Cameron knows. It's up to Cameron. Whoever he puts in front of him, we'll be ready for."
On who he'd like to see Kelly face:
"I don't have that call, but me as his trainer now and as a fan, I would love to see a rematch with (Sergio) Martinez."
