Unbeaten welterweight prospect Jessie Vargas will be facing veteran gatekeeper Alfonso Gomez on the Mayweather vs Cotto pay-per-view undercard on May 5, according to RingTV.com and Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez.

"The third fight is going to be Jessie Vargas. I'm finalizing a deal with Alfonso Gomez," said Gomez. "I'm finalizing the deal, but I'm still in the process right now."

Vargas (18-0, 9 KO) is coming off of a hard-fought but fairly one-sided win over Lanardo Tyner on February 24, and it was known going into that fight that a win would get him on the May 5 card, barring some kind of injury setback. The 22-year-old Vargas was also on the Mayweather vs Ortiz card last year, defeating Josesito Lopez in the fight of the night.

Gomez (23-5-2, 12 KO) is still best-known as a participant on the first season of "The Contender," and has never risen above second-tier status as a pro, but he's a solid test for Vargas at this stage. He's bigger and stronger than Tyner, and at 31, still brings a good fight. He didn't roll over against Canelo Alvarez last September, though he did lose by (early) stoppage.

Gomez is a veteran of these big fight undercards, having featured against Canelo on Mayweather vs Ortiz, against Jesus Soto Karass on the Pacquiao vs Cotto show in 2009, and a few months later in March 2010, he faced Jose Luis Castillo at Cowboys Stadium for Pacquiao vs Clottey.
