Featherweight contender Daniel Ponce De Leon will be part of the May 5 Mayweather vs Cotto pay-per-view undercard, which has been expected for a while now but seems as close to official as possible after a report from notifight.com (via BoxingScene.com).
Ponce De Leon (42-4, 35 KO) has lost two of his last three, but he was very competitive in a jump up to 130 against Adrien Broner (a fight some felt he won), and his other loss was to top featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa in a weird, one-off co-promotion between Top Rank and Golden Boy last September.
The 31-year-old Ponce De Leon does not know who his opponent will be, but chances seem slim that it would be a fellow top featherweight, given that most of them are busy or otherwise seem unavailable for the date.
Also slated for the undercard is the 154-pound WBC title fight between Canelo Alvarez and Shane Mosley, as well as Jessie Vargas vs Alfonso Gomez, which figures to be the PPV opener, with Ponce De Leon's fight going on second.
This will be Ponce De Leon's third appearance on a Mayweather PPV undercard, and thus far he's 2-0. He defeated Eduardo Escobedo on the Mayweather vs Hatton show, and bbeat Cornelius Lock on the Mayweather vs Mosley card.
