In a close fight on February 25th, Alexander Povetkin managed to squeak out a majority decision victory against Marco Huck. The fight was full of drama and was a generally good fight which Bad Left Hook scored 115-113 for Huck. Since there were so many close rounds, no one really thought that Huck got robbed, he just happened to be on the wrong side of a close fight. As expected, Huck is going back to cruiserweight to defend his title and Povetkin is going to make a mandatory defense. However, the fight was good enough to have a rematch and it seems that Kalle Sauerland conveyed the same sentiment to Alexander Pavlov.
"A Huck vs Povetkin rematch would be super-fight. We are not afraid to match our best boxers against each other. I think Huck surprised the audience with his capabilities. But, it's a little too early to discuss [a rematch]. [Huck] has to fight Ola Afolabi, and Povetkin has a fight with Hasim Rahman, which I believe will also be a difficult fight. I think that sooner or later, Povetkin and Huck could meet again," Sauerland said.
Even though I only caught parts of the fight, it seemed to be one of the most entertaining heavyweight matchups in recent years. I'm not sure if it matched the level of the Chris Arreola vs Tomasz Adamek but it was a very good fight. Also it makes sense for Marco Huck to move up to the heavyweight division. If he doesn't want to take on Yoan Pablo Hernandez or Krzysztof Wlodarczyk, then there are a couple of really good fights in the heavyweight division. A fight with either Arreola or Adamek would be fantastic for either Huck or Povetkin. Povetkin seems to be lining up a number of opponents not named Klitschko. What is your favorite dream matchup in the heavyweight division that does not include the K-Bros?
