Tonight at 9:30 p.m. EDT on Showtime in the US and BoxNation in the UK, a pair of title fights come your way from El Paso, Texas, with Abner Mares seeking a world title in his second weight class, and Anselmo Moreno looking to make his mark as the world's best bantamweight.
Mares (23-0-1, 13 KO) is moving up from bantamweight to super bantamweight to face Eric Morel (46-2, 23 KO), who is also essentially moving up from bantamweight for the fight. The 36-year-old Morel was a strong flyweight titleholder about a decade ago, but has never really come back from a 2005 blowout loss to Martin Castillo and the jail sentence that took three years of his career away right after that. A win tonight for Morel would be a leading contender for Upset of the Year.
Bryant TKO-3 Andrade | Ramos UD-10 Attah | Vargas TKO-3 Lora
In the co-feature, Moreno (32-1-1, 11 KO) is a heavy favorite against young Mexican David De La Mora (24-1, 17 KO), but De La Mora has been counted out before against a southpaw with a world title, and gave Koki Kameda just about all he could handle last August. So it wouldn't be the first time he defied the odds if he puts in a strong performance tonight and gives Moreno a test, but it would still be a bit surprising, given that Moreno is much better than Kameda.
