Well it looks like Scott's big red x might be taking a bit of a vacation. According to Rick Reeno, it seems that Golden Boy has reached out to Top Rank to make a good junior middleweight battle between Erislandy Lara and Vanes Martirosyan. It seems that this fight will be a WBC title eliminator with the winner becoming the mandatory for WBC beltholder Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. In order to set this fight in motion, Lara reached out to his manager and Richard Schaefer and told them that he really wanted the fight against Vanes.
"[Lara and his team] made it clear to me that they want to do the fight and I picked up the phone and I called Todd," Schaefer told BoxingScene.com. It's an interesting fight and I know the networks are interested in that fight. That's why I discussed it with Todd and we made an offer."
This fight could be a big deal or no deal at all. So it could show signs of the cold war between Golden Boy and Top Rank starting to thaw. Also notice how Schaefer reached out to duBoef and not Arum. Even though this is a good start I would bet a good amount of money that if Martirosyan wins this fight that Golden Boy will not match him with Canelo. Golden Boy is going to try and match the winner of this fight against James Kirkland, giving James some time to recover from his shoulder injury.
All of this being said, I really actually like this fight. Lara is extremely skilled and can take advantage of his opponent's mistakes, which he showed when he got absolutely robbed against Paul Williams. Vanes is a bit of an unknown quantity since he has been very protected. He did not look good when he faced Kassim Ouma in 2010 and hit the canvas again against Saul Roman. I like Lara to put on a boxing clinic against Martirosyan, dominating each round and making Vanes look like a poor boxer. Are you guys excited about this development between TR and GBP and who do you like in this fight?
