Tonight's edition of ESPN Friday Night Fights is live at 9 p.m. EDT on ESPN2 and ESPN3.com and features a pair of unbeaten fighters in the 10-round junior welterweight main event.
Raymond "Tito" Serrano of Philadelphia will face Karim Mayfield of San Francisco in that main event, live from Albany, New York. Serrano (18-0, 8 KO) and Mayfield (15-0-1, 9 KO) are both prospects, but the 22-year-old Serrano has more time on his hands than the 31-year-old Mayfield, who is trying to quickly move into title contention.
It will be a fight that should tell us something notable about both guys, so in that regard it's a strong FNF main event. There is a chance the fight won't be exciting, if we're honest -- Mayfield has an awkward style and Serrano isn't exactly thrilling, either.
The co-feature is an eight-round super middleweight-ish bout between Jason Escalera (13-0, 12 KO) and Nick Brinson (9-1-1, 5 KO). Though Brinson has a loss, he's faced slightly better competition than has Escalera to date.
I'm not certain I'm going to be in tonight as I'm sort of recharging the batteries for tomorrow afternoon's live coverage, and starting next week we get into a very busy, very important chunk of the schedule, so long as nothing else gets canceled. But the discussion is open for everyone to talk about the fights tonight even if I'm not here. I plan to at least record the show and watch the fights in the morning.
