The Huck vs Afolabi II card is underway in Erfurt, Germany, and the first televised fight of the evening has come and gone, with Kazakh-born, German-based heavyweight prospect Edmund Gerber questionably keeping his soft undefeated record with an eight-round unanimous decision over American veteran Maurice Harris. Scores were 79-73, 79-73, and 78-74 for Gerber. Bad Left Hook scored it for Harris, 77-76, but the win for Gerber was certainly not unexpected, as it was the home fighter getting a bit of protection.
[ Live Round-By-Round Coverage: Huck vs Afolabi II ]
Gerber (20-0, 13 KO) struggled mightily with Harris (25-16-2, 11 KO), whose boxing skills were clearly a cut above what Gerber had to offer. Gerber's lack of head movement, lack of offensive flexibility, and overall mediocrity will eventually get him beaten handily by someone good. As long as he stays at this level, he'll be protected. But he looks like a European title level contender at the very best, and he'll need to make improvements to be a serious contender.
Our live coverage continues, with it sounding like the vacant European heavyweight title fight between Kubrat Pulev and Alexander Dimitrenko is next.
