Floyd Mayweather got a test tonight from another great fighter, as Miguel Cotto may have put in the best performance of his career in a valiant, losing effort at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, satisfying the fans in attendance and those who paid on pay-per-view.
Mayweather won on scores of 117-111, 117-111, and 118-110. Bad Left Hook scored it 116-112 for Mayweather, who took the fight home late with a strong close in the late rounds, especially the 12th and final round.
Mayweather vs Cotto Results
Alvarez UD-12 Mosley
Vargas UD-10 Forbes | Quintana TKO-6 Latimore
Not to take anything away from Floyd Mayweather, who was terrific tonight and won the fight for sure, Cotto may have had the best defensive performance ever against Mayweather, leaving Floyd far less accurate than normal, and also landing at a better clip than most Mayweather opponents usually land. Cotto's jab was a good weapon in much of the fight, and he landed well to both the body and head.
But Floyd was just too good once again. In one of the best fights of his long, legendary career, Mayweather did the job, and was more than good enough to meet a strong challenge from a guy who proved his quality. Those who thought Miguel Cotto was shot, tonight should change those minds for good. He is still in the game, still a top fighter.
We'll have much more on the fight tomorrow, as well as Canelo vs Mosley and the rest of the card. We thank you greatly for joining us tonight, and we'll discuss what's next for both fighters in the near futre.
