IBF super middleweight titleholder Lucian Bute is currently dealing with a foot infection, but the condition has reportedly improved since last Saturday, and his scheduled May 26 fight with Carl Froch has not been postponed as of now.
Bute (30-0, 24 KO) is going on the road to face Froch (28-2, 20 KO) in Nottingham, where Froch will have a big-time hometown advantage. The Romanian-Canadian will meet with doctors again this week to confirm that the foot is healing at the proper pace, but this is probably at least a yellow flag if not a red one, and if the May 26 date is pushed back now, it shouldn't be any major surprise.
The fight is smack in the middle of one of the best runs of major fights we've seen in years, and holds its own with any of them, as it's the No. 2 and No. 3 super middleweight fighting while No. 1 (Andre Ward) takes time off and offers headbutt expert commentary for HBO during Canelo fights, apparently.
But if Bute can't be sure that he's going to be 100% to go to Nottingham and face probably the best opponent of his professional career, having him postpone the fight would frankly make sense.
We'll have more if anything changes.
