The highly-anticipated clash between top British super bantamweights Scott Quigg and Rendall Munroe ended in a technical draw at 43 seconds of the third round today, with Munroe badly cut over the right eye due to an accidental clash of heads.
Quigg and Munroe had split the first two rounds on my scorecard, with Munroe taking the first and Quigg the second frame. Quigg (24-0-1, 17 KO) had some trouble getting going in the first round, with Munroe (24-2-1, 10 KO) putting punches together in combination very nicely. But in the second, it was Quigg who began to box more effectively, with the busier Munroe having loads of trouble finding the mark, and Quigg landing some good right hands.
It was just heating up to become the fight we were all hoping to see, but the two came together very hard early in the third round, and before much else could happen, blood poured from a nasty gash on Munroe, which will take some time to heal properly, too.
In the televised co-feature, Ryan Rhodes was stopped on a body shot by Sergey Rabchenko.
We'll have much more live boxing coverage tonight, as we've got Adamek vs Chambers on NBC Sports at 9 p.m. EDT, and the Chavez vs Lee fight at 10 p.m. EDT on HBO (closer to 11 p.m. for live fight start, after Pacquiao vs Bradley replay).
