Yuriorkis Gamboa Update: Lawsuit Dismissed, Top Rank Split Expected

Yuriorkis Gamboa, arguably the best featherweight in boxing, has reportedly reached an agreement with Top Rank, the promotional company he left hanging earlier this year when he was set to face Brandon Rios on April 14, as the company has dropped a lawsuit against him, according to BoxingScene.com.

Top Rank will make an official statement today, reportedly, and it's expected to be announced that the two sides have reached an agreement, with Gamboa buying out his contract. Given that that definitely wouldn't be a cheap option, it figures that his next promoter probably paid the sum to buy out the deal. That's just speculation, but I don't think Gamboa had that money lying around, do you?

So where will Gamboa go? Some are saying "Mayweather Promotions," which would essentially make him a Golden Boy fighter, because Gamboa and Floyd Mayweather are friendly. Gamboa was part of Mayweather's entourage during all the press stuff and the fight itself when Mayweather fought Miguel Cotto in early May, but also attended the Pacquiao vs Bradley fight on June 9, leading some to figure that resolution of this issue would soon come, which it has.

I think there's a perfectly good chance it's just going to be Golden Boy Promotions that signs Gamboa, but we'll find out. The best news is we might actually get him back in the ring before the calendar turns to 2013.
