Victor Ortiz underwent successful surgery on his broken jaw yesterday, and today is resting in the hospital with his mouth wired shut, with a metal plate and screws inserted. But he's made clear to manager Rolando Arellano that he wants his rematch with Josesito Lopez, as his is contractual right. Lopez upset Ortiz on Saturday night.
"Victor's wired. He'll be wired for two weeks. They had to put in a plate and the screws in his jaw. The wires will come off in two weeks, and then he can probably start running and strengthening his jaw muscles."
... Arellano said that he believes that Ortiz would "absolutely" consider the rematch which was worked into the contract with Lopez.
In fact, Ortiz wrote down "exercise the rematch clause" on a piece of paper as Arellano spoke.
Ortiz (29-4-3, 22 KO) has little else that would be truly viable right now, and would no doubt love to get some revenge for the upset loss. Lopez (30-4, 18 KO) proved without a doubt that he's a very good fighter, and it was a standout fight that seems a good bet to be a winner again if the two hook it up for a rematch.
Golden Boy Promotions and Showtime have both expressed early interest in staging a rematch.
