We'll finally know the (latest) scheduled opponent for Canelo Alvarez, as Golden Boy's Richard Schaefer says a selection has been made for Alvarez's September 15 fight and will be announced in the coming days.
Out of the running are Cornelius Bundrage and Erislandy Lara (who to my knowledge was never in the running), who both fight tomorrow night on Showtime in separate bouts. And Schaefer says it will not be Marcos Maidana, who has never fought over 147 pounds but has reportedly been spreading the word that he's fighting Canelo.
Austin Trout has called out Canelo, but Golden Boy has sort of ignored that and said that he's not in the running, so he's probably out, too. There's a chance that James Kirkland has been presented an offer he can't turn down to risk a possible bum shoulder on the fight, which has been his twice but then turned down both times. Paul Williams and Victor Ortiz were also scheduled opponents at different points.
Other names that have floated around through various media means have been Miguel Cotto (highly unlikely), Carlos Molina, Vanes Martirosyan, and Carlos Quintana. We'll know soon, as apparently Golden Boy is sticking with this idea to run against the Sergio Martinez vs Julio Cesar Chavez Jr PPV, come hell or high ater.
