Tonight at 9 p.m. EDT on Showtime, a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation plays host to three fights featuring notable names, with a junior middleweight title rematch for the main event.
Cornelius "K9" Bundrage (31-4, 18 KO) will defend the IBF 154-pound belt against the man he won it from, St. Louis' own Cory Spinks (39-6, 11 KO). Spinks won't have home field advantage, which is rare for him, as tonight's card is being held at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. Back in August 2010, Bundrage decimated Spinks and stopped him in five rounds to lift the title. If Spinks can't get it done tonight, it's worth wondering if there's much left for the 34-year-old veteran.
On the undercard, exciting featherweight prospect Gary Russell Jr (19-0, 11 KO) faces Christopher Perez (23-2, 14 KO). Perez, 22, is a total unknown who has lost a pair of fights already, and his only win since his last loss came over a guy who was 0-2. On paper, this is very soft matchmaking for Russell, as the Haymon fighter gets showcased against someone not worth a showcase spot. But crazier things have happened.
Also on the undercard, junior middleweight contender Erislandy Lara (16-1-1, 11 KO) faces Freddy Hernandez (30-2, 20 KO) in what should be an entertaining fight one way or another.
I'm out for a wedding today, so Andrew Fruman will be covering the fights for you tonight and giving you a place to talk about the card as it goes on, and he'll also have a post-fight recap for you. Enjoy the fights everyone!
