Bob Arum of Top Rank had an interesting take on the Canelo Alvarez vs Josesito Lopez fight, which was first rumored for CBS on September 15, but will instead be airing on Showtime. Steve Kim of Max Boxing tweeted that he asked Arum about that fight, and Arum responded to the point:
"Les Moonves wont let this garbage on CBS."
Les Moonves, as you could probably guess if you don't know, is the President and CEO of CBS. I'm not going to take the hardline stance of Arum here, since I have nothing to gain by doing so, but yeah, I don't think Canelo-Lopez is good enough to go to network TV in some ways.
On the other hand, I think it's about the biggest level of fight you could ever expect a major promoter to sell to a network instead of a premium cable network or taking it to PPV. So that's all quite fun.
Canelo vs Lopez will air head-to-head against Arum's Chavez Jr vs Martinez pay-per-view with HBO. So much for Golden Boy's "history in the making" hype, too. Man, it's almost as if they're just like everyone else, and could most closely be compared to Top Rank. Gee. Gosh. Golly.
